Dr. Katie Spillane is a mixed animal veterinarian who joined VMC in 2016. She grew up in the Blue Ridge mountains in Blacksburg, Virginia. After spending many years away from the area for school and work, Dr. Spillane decided to come home to the mid-Atlantic. A lifelong animal lover, horses were her first passion and family pets her favorite childhood companions.
As an undergraduate at the University of Southern California, Dr. Spillane pursued a degree in biology, developed a special interest in medicine, and cherished her time as a member and then president of the university equestrian team. Veterinary school was a natural next step, and she obtained her veterinary degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 2012. She spent the next four years in private equine and small animal practices in south Florida.
Dr. Spillane currently has three pets of her own. Izzie is a pit-bull mix who was spayed by a student in the class ahead of Dr. Spillane at the University of Pennsylvania. Izzie loves people and is special because she is deaf. Fiona the cat followed a vet school friend home one day in 2009 and has been helping Dr. Spillane hold down papers ever since. Copper, born in 2014, is a miniature dachshund / beagle mix who has earned the title of household trouble maker – but he is also the cutest member of the household!
Dr. Spillane enjoys working together with clients to maximize their animals’ health. She has a soft spot for puppies, old cats, and horses of every age. Her professional interests range from preventive care and internal medicine to anesthesia and soft tissue surgery.
During her free time, Dr. Spillane enjoys spending time with family and friends, flying airplanes, and riding horses.
